If tobacco is legal, will an employer disqualify you for employment if they find nicotine in your urine test?
I have been smoking almost every day for the past several weeks and I’m probably getting a new job soon. The job I’ve applied for requires a urine sample test to look for "controlled substances." Will they disqualify me for employment if they find nicotine in my urine sample? Or is it just for illegal drugs like marijuana?
For the record: yes, I know smoking is bad for me. I’ve only been smoking for a couple weeks and I’m working very hard to quit.

When they say "controlled substances" they mean "ILLEGAL controlled substances."
Nicotine is legal, and the test doesn’t even look for it. Caffeine is also a drug but it’s legal too.
The test doesn’t look for nicotine. You’re fine
Tobacco is not a controlled substance. They will not fire you, nor do they test for nicotine. They are looking for marijuana, cocaine, heroine, meth ect…….
no it is illegal for under age!!!!!!!!!!! it is not considered a illegal drug !!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF tobacco is legal, WILL disqualify you…? Yes, of course! Employers only disqualify you for legal substances. (???)
Are you asking if every employer in the world cares if you smoke and if they will check on it? If so, the answer is no. If you want to know if some specific employer will do so, ask that employer.
Corn syrup is a drug too. NICOTINE ISN’T A DRUG.
Nicotine is not a controlled substance, it’s a legal drug. And employers don’t test for it. They’re looking for potheads, not smokers.
